affordable meals?
I'm an avid fan of cooking videos, as well as food and restaurant reviews. Will I ever go to this three star restaurant to spend $350 on a tasting menu? You vastly overestimate my tax bracket. But @itsjulianmu has a series on youtube where he goes to different restaurants in New York City, all with the goal of eating a full day of meals for under $15, and I got to thinking... That I can do.
See, food is expensive. But I want restaurants to exist. And I'm selfish, okay, and now that almost every pizza by the slice place I've been to has shut down, now that my favorite Hong Kong style bakery is under new ownership and twice the price (and too far away for simple eating), now that even Culver's is a sizeable dent in the wallet... I'M TIRED! I just want to eat good food! AND be able to pay my rent afterward!
So today I went to Boludo's Uptown location with the express goal of eating lunch for under $15. And I succeeded. I got two empanadas- an espinaca and jamón y queso- both $5.99 each. I've had Boludo before and found that it was just as good as I remembered. Crispy outside, abundant and flavorful insides, with a fresh and slightly acidic dipping sauce that cuts through the richness with ease. And two was the perfect amount of food for me- I would recommend three if you have a bigger appetite (or are just feeling like it's a three empanada kind of day!) but the portion size is still very reasonable.
When I was there it was completely empty. I'm sure I came at an odd time (not quite dinner time, definitely too late for normal people to have lunch), so this isn't to say that it's soooo empty and dead all the time. But I say it because the food is good, it was cheaper than pretty much everything else on the block, and I'd like to see it stick around.
So, if you can get to the Uptown area (it's open now, thank god) I'd recommend it!
